The Developing Person Through the Life Span 10t...



The rainbow-colored lines show how long a person could expect to live once they had reached that given, older, age. The light green line, for example, represents the life expectancy for children who had reached age 10.


Life expectancy estimates only describe averages, these curves therefore provide an important complementary view and help us understand how the inequality of life lengths has changed over time. In the 19th century the inequality was very large, many died at a very young age and a considerable number of people died between the age of 5 and 60. Today the inequality is much lower, the huge majority survives the first 60 or 70 years of their life and the span at which most people die is much more compressed than it was 150 years ago.


The chart shows the level of both measures at two points in time, about a generation apart (1995 and 2014 respectively). The arrows connect these two observations, thereby showing the change over time of both measures for all countries in the world. As it can be seen, countries with higher expenditure on healthcare per person tend to have a higher life expectancy. And looking at the change over time, we see that as countries spend more on health, life expectancy of the population increases.


Given that life expectancy at birth is highly sensitive to the rate of death in the first few years of life, it is common to report life expectancy figures at different ages, both under the period and cohort approaches. For example, the UN estimates that the (period) global life expectancy at age 15 in 2005 was 73.6 years. This means that the group of 15-year-old children alive around the world in 2005 could expect to live another 63.6 years (i.e. until the age of 73.6), provided that mortality patterns observed in 2005 remained constant throughout their lifetime.


Finally, another point to bear in mind is that period and cohort life expectancy estimates are statistical measures, and they do not take into account any person-specific factors such as lifestyle choices. Clearly, the length of life for an average person is not very informative about the predicted length of life for a person living a particularly unhealthy lifestyle.

The Literacy Project really sponsored two strands of staff development. The organization had always allowed release time -- at the staff member's discretion -- for conferences, workshops, and other ongoing education and training. Later, as the organization's finances became healthier, TLP allowed each staff member a certain amount of funding and travel reimbursement for these ventures. That strand continued -- in later years, with some coordination -- throughout the life of the organization.


Evaluation of a freeway management and operations program (and other transportation improvements) must occur throughout the life cycle of the program and the associated facility. This includes identifying segments with less-than-desired performance and other operational deficiencies, analyzing alternative solutions for correcting these problems, estimating the associated benefits and costs, and determining the actual improvement in performance and its cost effectiveness. Performance measures and self-assessments are just part (albeit a significant one) of this ongoing evaluation process. Other analytical tools and evaluation methods, as summarized in this section, may also be necessary and appropriate.


Development activities are focused on developing new tools and improving the analytical foundation of existing tools. The NGSIM program (Next Generation SIMulation) is part of this activity. The goal of the NGSIM Program is to ensure the needs of the model users are met through improving the capability of commercial models. The products of the NGSIM program will include:


It is crucial that the life-cycle costs of the program must be determined in terms of its complete implementation and operating schedule, recognizing that a freeway management and operations program will likely entail many separate steps, with elements that are deployed and become operational at various points in time. In developing life-cycle costs, the time stream of capital and operating / maintenance costs must be determined and net present worth techniques applied (e.g., discount the annual recurring costs and sum with capital costs to derive the net present value).


Computation of an alternative's net present worth involves a conversion of all costs and benefits of an alternative that are incurred at the alternative's initiation and throughout its useful life (life-cycle) to an equivalent current value. The current value of the equivalent costs is subtracted from the current value of the equivalent benefits of the alternative. If the benefits exceed the costs, the alternative can be justified economically. Furthermore, comparisons among alternatives are straightforward; the alternative that provides the greatest additional benefits over costs (sometimes referred to as "excess benefits") is said to have the greatest net present worth.


4. Development of high-throughput single cell imaging technologies to measure single cell mitochondrial function, and to measure single mitochondrial function to determine the role of heterogeneity in cell life-death decision-making.


The Winn laboratory seeks to understand the unique biological mechanisms of human placentation. Abnormalities in placental development and function account for many obstetric complications. The pregnancy complication of preclampsia is the primary diseease process that the lab studies ,which is a major couase of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. While the placenta itself is one of the key characteristics for defining mammals, placental development is not highly conserved across species and therefore human placental biology is different from most available animal models: it is one of the most invasive placentas, and results in the formation of an organ comprised of cells from both the fetus and the mother. In addition to this fascinating chimerism that requires maternal immune adaptations to avoid rejection of the allograph fetus, placental cells are deeply involved in the remodeling of the maternal vasculature, in order to redirect large volumes of maternal blood to the placenta to support the developing fetus. The molecular and cellular aspects of human placenta invasion are often copted by cancers. The placenta is also a critical endorcrine organ which orchestrates the many physiologic and metabolic changes that occur in pregnancy. As such, the investigation of this human organ covers a broad array of human biological processes. The lab is dedicated to undertake, the challenge of shedding understanding into the human placental process of immune tolerance, vascular remodeling, cellular invasion and endocrine function. The Winn Lab uses a combination of human samples, in vitro cellular and organoid model systems to dissect the molecular and cellular basis of placental function as well as investigates pregnancy cohort for translational studies to improve prediction, diagnosis and treatment of obstetrical complications. The ultimate goal of the Winn Lab is to improve pregnancy health for the pregnant person and their offspring and train the next generation of reproductive and perinatal scientists.


The content of DNA, RNA and protein in cerebellum at different stages of the life span of rat as well as the ratios of protein to DNA, showed-that in this region extensive cell proliferation occurs between the 1st and 7th day after birth and once again between the ages of 225 and 750 days. The putative DNA degrading enzymes, acid and alkaline DNases, showed a positive correlation with the rapid DNA accretion noticed during developmental stages as well as during old age. From these results, it could be presumed that there was a second bout of glial cell multiplication in aging cerebellum and that DNases must be playing some important role in the process.


In this course we will learn about African history through the stories that Africans themselves have told about their own lives. We will use oral history, songs of West Africa's griots; slave narratives; political autobiographies; theatre and film to explore the personal narration of lived experience. To guide our class discussions we will also consult scholarly essays about life history as a genre, to help us understand the methodology behind the production of these important texts. Class activities will include seminar discussions, writing workshops, a field trip and intermittent background lectures. Each student will carry out an individual research project on their topic of choice.
